Stella M. Penner, FCPA, FCGA, CA

Auditing and accounting is a reality of every not-for-profit organization and business in Alberta, regardless of size. Upholding the high standards set out by both the industry and Calvista LLP is Stella Penner. Her eye for detail and her background in auditing and accounting ensure that every client she deals with can move his/her business forward confidently.

For over 15 years, Stella worked with a national firm of chartered accountants in their Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Calgary offices, serving auditing and accounting clients. Her business acumen and high standards led her into professional development roles, where she could ensure that her firm’s high-quality standards were being followed as she trained staff as part of the firm’s national professional development program. Stella has also worked for a time as the Executive Director of the Certified General Accountants of Alberta, after serving the Association as the director in charge of practice reviews of Alberta CGA firms. Having never lost her interest in professional development, Stella went on to share her experience as a full-time instructor in financial and management accounting, audit, finance, and organizational design and analysis at universities and colleges in Edmonton and Calgary. As a partner at Calvista LLP, Stella works with both not-for-profit organizations and corporations. She maintains firm quality control to the high standards required by our clients, provides internal and external consulting services, trains staff, and ensures that audit and accounting standards are applied consistently in the engagement process.

Stella also serves the community in a variety of ways, from previous terms on the boards of local not-for-profit organizations, such as the John Howard Society of Alberta and the Edmonton Big Brothers/Big Sisters Society, to offering her training skills to organizations such as the Alberta Board Development Program. Stella was honoured with a fellowship from the Certified General Accountants of Canada for her contributions to the community and the profession in 2003, and was awarded a Life Membership in 2012.

In order to keep a work-life balance, Stella enjoys golfing, spending time with her family and as a hobby, trains for and participates in a number of charity runs  during the summer and fall months, though she hasn’t yet been convinced to attempt the marathon distance.
